Henderson is the second-largest city in the state of Nevada with a population of almost 308,000 people. Often referred to as “the bedroom community” of Las Vegas, Henderson offers all of the amenities of a full-fledged city. It is sprawled across 107 square miles in the southeastern part of the Las Vegas Valley and can be accessed via Interstates-15, 215, and 515, Highways 93 and 95.
Interstate-11, a new highway that will link Phoenix and Las Vegas is currently under construction. A section of the highway from Hoover Dam to Henderson will be finished in June 2018.
Henderson Executive Airport is a public airport on the southern tip of Henderson. It is considered a business aviation facility and serves as a primary reliever for the Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport.
Residential planned neighborhoods in Henderson include Anthem, Inspirada, Calico Ridge, Cadence, Green Valley, Green Valley Ranch, Lake Las Vegas, Westgate, McCullough Hills, Whitney Ranch, Macdonald Ranch, Gibson Springs, McCullough Hills, Tuscany, and Black Mountain.
Henderson’s population is projected to grow in the coming years, The city issued more than 14,000 building permits in 2017, and the number of residential permits grew by more than 7 percent from 2016.
Henderson’s residents enjoy access to Black Mountain, Sloan Canyon National Conservation area, Lake Mead Recreational Area and the Colorado River.
The city’s most popular hiking trails are Black Mountain trail, Frenchman Mountain trail, McCullough Hills trail. The Black Mountain trail offers an impressive view of the Las Vegas Strip at any time of the day.
Lake Las Vegas that is located in the middle of the eponymous neighborhood offers a multitude of recreational opportunities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and flyboarding. Dinner and cocktail cruises are also available on the lake in warmer months.
Henderson is also a home to the largest recreational facility in Nevada – the Multigenerational Center at Liberty Pointe.
Henderson has municipal, public and private golf courses. Among public golf courses are Black Mountain, The Revere Golf Club, Chimera Golf Club. Private golf courses are SouthShore, Anthem Country Club, and DragonRidge.
It also has 93 ballfields, 53 tennis courts, 11 pools and a number of recreation centers for different ages. The city also boasts 69 parks, 5 of which are school parks.
The city received national accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies for its parks and recreation system. It also received the National Gold Medal for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Administration in 1999 and 2014.
Henderson has also won best place to live awards, best place to raise a family, and safest city awards from multiple sources.
Henderson is home to some of the best restaurants in the Las Vegas Valley. From fine dining to on-the-go eats, the city has a variety of Japanese, Mexican, Italian, Chinese and Thai eateries. Among them are Craft Kitchen, Naga Thai Restaurant, Pizza Rock, Ventano Italian Grill & Seafood, King’s Fish House.
An increasing number of shopping malls, movie theater complexes, concert venues, restaurants and casino resorts come to Henderson. Among the city’s most popular shopping destinations are Galleria at Sunset and The District at Green Valley Ranch. Henderson is also a home to M Casino, Green Valley Ranch Casino, and Sunset Station Casino.
Lion Habitat Ranch and Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve are some of the favorite spots among locals.
Henderson is a home to several libraries, James I. Gibson Library; Green Valley Library; Heritage Park Senior Facility; and Paseo Verde Library. Those who want to get a glimpse into Henderson’s history should visit Clark County Museum – a mix of outdoor area with historic homes, a ghost town and an indoor exhibit that features a Nevada’s timeline.
Henderson Pavilion and Henderson Events Plaza are the venues that host dozens of events every year. Henderson Pavilion is the largest outdoor amphitheater in Nevada.
Nine high schools, nine middle schools and several elementary schools currently serve the young residents of Henderson. Among Henderson’s middle schools are Del E Webb Middle School, Thurman White Middle School, Bob Miller Middle School and Jack & Terry Mannion Middle School. Among Henderson’s high schools are Green Valley High School, Liberty High School, Coronado High School, and Nevada State High School. Highly sought after elementary schools are John Vanderburg Elementary and Neil C. Twitchell Elementary.
Several college campuses are also located within the city limits. Among them are Nevada State College, College of Southern Nevada, University of Phoenix, and Touro University Nevada.
Henderson’s schools outperform Clark County and the state of Nevada in reading proficiency, math and graduation rate, according to a recent report by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
